"TLC Marco Polo"

TLC Marco Polo, blue bicolor Ragdoll

Marco Polo is one of my personal favorites! So many thanks to Pat Steckman (USA), his breeder and owner, who allowed me to use the wording and pictures from her website and sent me some additional information.

Pat wrote about Marco Polo:

Polo was born on February 23, 1989 (Dam: "Co-Ed's Alexis Moonshadow", seal mitted, Sire: " Sheyenne Nighttime Nick", blue bicolor). We were hoping for a little blue bicolor girl, but as luck would have it, we got Polo. Although we wanted that little girl we did not love him any less. The reason that he was named "Marco Polo" was because he was an adventurer. He was the first of his litter to scale the walls of his birthing box to explore new lands. Hence the name "Marco Polo".

From the beginning Polo was a true showman, he loved the show circuit and enjoyed all the attention he got. After he finaled on one ring the judge turned to him and said Polo you are so good why don't you take a bow, and he did. Mary Katherine (Mom) said she would not have believed it if she had not seen it with her own eyes. So you might have said it was his purpose in life.

Polo sired 3 litters before he was neutered. Due to the fact that being a stud muffin was not in the cards for him (he lost too much weight when those girls would look his way) Polo was well on his way to being the show cat I had always dreamed of. He travelled all over the country with me and also made a trip to Europe to a cat show in Frankfurt, Germany, in March 1997. Polo was ACFA's Alter of the year 1992/1993. This was a big achievement for the Ragdoll as a breed, as this was the first time a Ragdoll has been Number One in any association so you can imagine how proud we were of him. He was also the very first annual winner of the Dayton-Trubey Award (for the show season 1989 - 1990) and received the Riegelman-Trubey Award for the show season 1991/92. Polo was a Supreme Grand Champion in TICA and was one of the cats presented to CFA when we went for acceptance in 1993.

Polo passed away in November 1999 very suddenly and left a very big void in our lives. He will always be fondly remembered for his love of the shows and his need for my affection."

I  started in 1987 by buying a pet quality Ragdoll from Co-Ed cattery (LeeAnn Edinger & Shirley Comins). My mother thought "Alexis Moonshadow", a seal mitted girl, was so beautiful that she should be bred. Well, we started by showing her and she did well. So LeeAnn and Shirley sold us a male to use to Alexis - "Co-Ed's Blake Cattington", seal colorpoint - (there is no denying a certain resemblance to the names of the main characters of "Dynasty", a TV show of the 1980ies... ;-) R.W.)

My mother came up with the name TLC because that is the way kittens should be raised with lots of TLC. Alexis is the mother to "TLC Czar Nicholas" and "TLC Phineas Fogg" who are both national winners in ACFA."
